Stimulated Raman Scattering Microscopy Enables Gleason Scoring of Prostate Core Needle Biopsy by a Convolutional Neural Network

Abstract: Focal therapy (FT) has been proposed as an approach to eradicate clinically significant prostate cancer (PCa) while preserving the normal surrounding tissues to minimize treatment-related toxicity. Rapid histology of core needle biopsies is essential to ensure the precise FT for localized lesions and to determine tumor grades. However, it is difficult to achieve both high accuracy and speed with currently available histopathology methods. Here, we demonstrated that stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy … Show more

“…Apart from the experimental improvements, image denoising might be an additional choice to increase the SNR, owing to the rapid development of deep-learning algorithms 39 42 Furthermore, as another powerful vibration spectroscopy, IR absorption coupled with photochromic probes may demonstrate interesting photoswitching capability, as shown in Fig. S9 in the Supplementary Material and could be potentially realized for SR vibrational imaging as well.…”

“…The present study indicated that organs such as sucker and rostellum in cestodes and mouth and the shape of lips and teeth in nematodes could significantly determine the helminths' biology. Some researchers have been used electron microscopy for diagnostic purposes either in parasitology or other fields (Ahmad et al, 2023; Ao et al, 2023; Bahadur et al, 2023; Usma et al, 2022). The high magnification 3D images of the SEM reveal the surface structures and organs and their relationships which results in better distinguishing the species and showing their detailed differences.…”

“…However, urologists are concerned about its effectiveness due to the difficulties in real-time evaluation of lesions to ensure complete and safe ablation. Ao et al reported that SRS microscopy was able to effectively reveal the diverse histologic features of fresh prostatic CNB tissues. Four histologic grades, including benign and Gleason patterns 3–5, were imaged and confirmed with H&E on both thin sections and fresh tissues (Figure a).…”
