Stimulated Cellular Immune System in Patients with Congestive Heart Failure

Abstract: Summary:In this cross-sectional study, we analysed serum concentrations of soluble markers of cellular immune activation, namely, interferon-γ, neopterin (a product of activated macrophages), soluble interleukin-2 receptor, and soluble CDS, in 25 patients with congestive heart failure. Ten (40%) patients showed increased concentrations (i.e. above the reference ranges of healthy controls) of neopterin, 14 (56%) showed increased soluble interleukin-2 receptor, and 6 (24%) showed increased soluble CDS. Endogenou… Show more

“…The increased concentrations of NPT are found in dilated cardiomyopathy group with strong immune activation—HLA expression in endomyocardium in comparison to controls, but the difference with the group of weak immune activation was not significant. Elevated NPT concentrations in patients with heart failure due to idiopathic or inflammatory DCM were described previously, especially in patients with active myocarditis assessed according to the Dallas criteria [27–29]. In our patients active myocarditis was diagnosed only in twenty patients and NPT concentration was increased in MCI group including active and borderline compared to controls.…”

“…1990). This finding is of particular relevance in C H F which is associated with significant immune activation (Levine et al 1990;Fuchs et al 1993). Taken together, these observations raise the possibility that the immune system may play a direct role in the regulation of vascular tone in CHF via production of ET-1 by H. Krum et al MNC.…”

“…In addition statins were shown to lower the neopterin production that downregulates the immunoreactivity of T cells and of macrophages in vitro as well as in a case-control study of patients undergoing coronary angiography (20,21 ). It also has been postulated that cellular immunity might be activated and thus neopterin concentrations might be increased in patients with congestive heart failure (22)(23)(24).…”
