Stimulated Brillouin fiber-optic laser gyroscope

Abstract: We achieved simultaneous bidirectional lasing in an all-fiber ring laser, using stimulated Brillouin scattering as the gain medium. The Brillouin lasing threshold was 60 microW for a He-Ne pump at 1.15 microm. The operation of this device as a ring-laser gyroscope was demonstrated.

“…To increase SBS efficiency in a Brillouin fiber laser, BP is tuned to a short fiber length cavity [26] which adds other features: (a) BP linewidth is filtered by the cavity which increases SBS efficiency, (b) where this filtering decreases BP power allowed to propagate inside the cavity, but the previous decrease in BP power is compensated by the accumulation of power inside the cavity at resonance. These effects have a net increase in SBS efficiency.…”

“…O PTICAL FIBER ring resonators have been used in a number of applications, including fiber ring lasers [1], [2], sensors [3], fiber laser gyroscopes [4], optical spectrum analyzers [5], [6], and optical delay lines [7]. In this paper, we report the use of a fiber ring resonator for a different application, i.e., to enhance the multiplexing capability of white light interferometric sensors.…”

“…Its output power reaches 70.1 mW, which is more than seven times higher than the seeded BP power. The BYFL has an optical signal-to-noise ratio that is greater than 65 dB and has many potential applications, such as in controllable optical delay lines, sensing, and RF photonics.OCIS , optical carrier amplitude control [3] , gyroscopes [4] , and lasers [5] . Brillouin fiber lasers (BFLs) have attracted significant interest for decades due to their linewidth narrowing effect.…”
