In 401 the desire of Alaric to secure territory for his Gothic followers led him to try his luck in Italy. There he was eventually repulsed by Roman forces under Stilicho, who also dealt with a substantial tribal invasion under Radagaisus in 406. Stilicho, however, was unpopular and his elimination through court intrigues in 408 facilitated a fresh attempt by Alaric. Negotiations with Emperor Honorius proved futile and, in frustration, Alaric eventually captured and sacked Rome itself in 410. Alaric died soon after and his followers, still searching for a safe home, moved to southern Gaul.
