Sterols and Terpenoids from Melia azedarach

Abstract: Three new sterols (1-3) including an unprecedented ring A-seco natural product (1), five new terpenoids (4-8), and 15 known compounds were isolated from the bark of Melia azedarach. Their structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic data, and the structure of 1 was confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

“…Similarly, it is widely known that furan and its derivatives have useful biological activities in terms of pharmaceutical and clinical aspects. They are intermediates of many pharmaceuticals and pesticides synthesized to date, such as carbofuran [2], furadantin [3] and furanomycin [4], which have been widely used in clinic. It has been found that the biological activities of the discussed compounds are considerably increased when they are bonded into metal complex molecules.…”

“…Meliastatin exhibited significant inhibition of the P388 cancer cell line. 306,307 The roots of Euphorbia micractina afforded further euphane/tirucallane derivatives 526-530. 308 Three 3(4),9(10)-disecocycloartane peroxy triterpene lactones, pseudolarolides Q 2 531, T 1 532, and T 2 533, were discovered from the seeds of Pseudolarix kaempferi.…”

“…Triterpenoids such as meliastatin 3 (8) [10] bearing a hydroperoxy group in the side-chain were often found from Melia sp. [36,37]; however, steroids (e.g., 3, 4, and 6) bearing a hydroperoxy group in the side-chain have not been isolated before from the genus Melia. The origin of C-24 peroxidized steroids has long been questioned.…”
