Abstract:Objective: Excess unesterified (free) cholesterol can induce formation of cholesterol crystals in hepatocyte lipid droplets. Presence of such crystal distinguishes metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH) from simple steatosis and may underlie its pathogenesis by causing cell damage that triggers liver inflammation.
