“…The octanol-water partition coefficient of a compound, usually expressed in log form (log K ow ), measures the compound’s lipophilicity [25] and is known to predict the bioaccumulation of environmental toxins in aquatic organisms [1820]. To test the predictive ability of log K ow on cellular uptake of steroids in vitro and in vivo, we plotted the log of the cell-to-media or tissue-to-blood concentration ratio against the log K ow of steroids.…”

“…To our knowledge, the lipophilicity-driven tendency for cells to passively accumulate steroids in a structure-specific manner has not been previously described, but studies in several fields have provided evidence complementary to the findings we report here. Various studies have reported tendencies of aquatic organisms to accumulate heightened concentrations of steroids both in the wild [20, 49] and in controlled laboratory settings [35, 36, 50]. Cells in the aqueous environment of a tissue culture dish could be seen as analogous to organisms in the aqueous environment of a lake or stream.…”

“…Pond farming is the most common farming mode in China, and its output accounts for 70% of total freshwater farming output [27]. Most aquaculture farms are traditionally operated on a small scale, lacking effective management measures [28]. Aquaculture sites, especially ponds, are good reservoirs for MPs.…”

“…Additional synthetic progestins were found in fish with bioaccumulation factors in the tens to hundreds (Fent 2015). Bioconcentration of other steroids, including estrogens (Al-Ansari et al 2010;Huang et al 2013), androgens (Liu et al 2017), and glucocorticoids (Nakayama et al 2014) has also been reported in fish. Either individual steroid classes were found or different classes, as for instance progestins, androgens, and estrogens in lakes (Huang et al 2017) or freshwater cultured farms in China (Liu et al 2017).…”
