Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) and Its Applications

Abstract: Although most insect species have a beneficial role in the ecosystems, some of them represent major plant pests and disease vectors for livestock and humans. During the last six–seven decades, the sterile insect technique (SIT) has been used as part of area-wide integrated pest management strategies to suppress, contain, locally eradicate or prevent the (re)invasion of insect pest populations and disease vectors worldwide. This Special Issue on “Sterile insect technique (SIT) and its applications”, which consi… Show more

“…SIT is an environmentally friendly pest management strategy that hinders pest propagation by releasing large numbers of sterile insects into the wild [ 61 , 62 ]. Severe mutations in the external genitalia as a result of dsx manipulation have been reported in multiple Lepidopterans [ 34 , 36 , 44 ].…”

“…A complete repertoire of the SIT programmes attempted and those currently running is reported in the International Database on Insect Disinfestation and Sterilization (IDIDAS) [11]. The sterile insect control system has now been extended to mosquito control through advances in mass rearing and delivery techniques that make operational implementation more practical [12,13,14,15].…”

“…In this case, it was shaped like a longitudinal suture on the female pupae's abdominal segments and as a short slit covered by two semicircular lumps on the male pupae. Nowadays, sterile insect techniques have become common in pest management programs by mating disruption (Marec 2019;Bourtzis and Vreysen 2021), in which early sex determination of insects is very important. Accordingly, distinguishing male and female pupae through morphological characteristics will contribute to the easier application of this technique.…”
