Stereotactic techniques in managing pediatric brain tumors

Abstract: Stereotactic techniques available for managing pediatric brain tumors include not only stereotactic biopsy but also stereotactic craniotomy, brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. This paper illustrates the use of these techniques in brain tumors in children over a 2-year period at Children's Hospital, Boston. Stereotactic biopsy was used in six cases of deep-seated tumor, with successful tissue diagnosis in all six. Stereotactic craniotomy, in which excision of a mass was done in the stereotactic frame… Show more

“…The use of stereotactic radiosurgery among pediatric patients had been slower in its implementation but in gen eral has paralleled the application in adults [6][7][8][9], One reason for the lag is concern regarding potential CNS tox icity in pediatric patients treated with radiation. Most studies have demonstrated a relationship between dose, fraction size, volume of tissue irradiated, patient age and the incidence of late CNS toxicity with standard external beam radiotherapy [16][17][18].…”

“…About 50% of cerebral tumors in children are low-grade gliomas, about 30% anaplastic gliomas or glioblastomas, and the rest a variety of less common tumors, such as primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET), choroid plexus carcinoma, and meningiomas. The characteristics of specific tumors and their management have been described in a number of publications [4,6,10,20,21,22,28,45,53,55,63,68].…”

“…These strategies, already used extensively in the treatment of adult brain tumors, have recently been applied to the pediatric population [4, 5, 6]. However, there are some drawbacks.…”
