Stereotactic radiation therapy for treatment of canine intracranial meningiomas

Abstract: The objective of this study is to determine the rate of toxicity, median survival time (MST) and prognostic factors in dogs with presumed intracranial meningiomas that were treated with stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT). Patient demographics, neurological history, details of SRT plans and response to treatment (including toxicity and survival times) were examined for potential prognostic factors. Overall MST (MST) due to death for any cause was 561 days. There was a mild to moderate exacerbation of neurolog… Show more

“…The dose‐limiting normal tissue in our study was the normal brain. The goal of the Radiation Oncology Service at CSU is to keep 1.1 cc of normal brain under 24Gy for 3 fractions and under 27Gy for 4 fractions . Assuring that the brain was within tolerance constraints took precedence over total radiation dosage administered to the tumor volumes.…”

“…Stereotactic radiation therapy is now an accepted treatment for many tumor types and locations in both human and veterinary medicine . Stereotactic radiation therapy delivers an ablative dose of radiation to the tumor while avoiding normal tissues in the field .…”

“…The efficacies of various treatment modalities on canine brain tumours have been previously reported, including surgery, radiotherapy (RT) and cytotoxic chemotherapy . Traditionally, RT with or without surgery has been the mainstay treatment for most intracranial neoplasia .…”

“…Radiation therapy has become a mainstay of treatment for intracranial neoplasia in both human and veterinary patients, either as a primary or adjunctive treatment (Dickinson, 2014). Radiotherapy has demonstrated to improve ST in presumptive and confirmed meningiomas, with ST ranging from 240 to 577 days (Turrel et al, 1984;Evans et al, 1993;Axlund et al, 2002;Bley et al, 2005;Griffin et al, 2014;Rossmeisl, 2014). Radiation therapy has been reported to be beneficial when compared to SRA for the treatment of meningiomas (Axlund et al, 2002).…”
