Stereotactic breast biopsy: A review & applicability in the Indian context

Abstract: Stereotactic biopsy is used for sampling of suspicious non-palpable lesions identified on mammography or digital breast tomosynthesis which are not visible on ultrasound. Stereotactic biopsy is preferable to surgical excision biopsy and helps avoid surgery for benign lesions. Providing tissue diagnosis in patients with early breast cancer may help in formulating a management strategy. Stereotactic biopsy can be carried out using either a dedicated prone table with the patient lying prone or an upright mammogra… Show more

“…Different needles and pressures have been investigated and the preferences of the surgeon should be considered and accounted for when designing a core needle experiment 95 . Localization error for stereotactic core biopsy is impacted by many procedural variables including parallax shift and entrance angle, but is greatest in the z‐direction 96 and is estimated to be <5 mm 97 …”

“…MRI-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB) is performed for MRI-only lesions, whereas stereotactic VABB is performed for abnormalities seen on mammography only. 26 VABB uses a suction system, which allows a larger tissue sample to be obtained from a single insertion. Certain imaging modalities demonstrate certain abnormalities better.…”
