Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for the treatment of inoperable stage I non-small cell lung cancer patients

Abstract: According to the published evidence as well as our own experience, SBRT is a safe and feasible approach for early NSCLC. Its results may be comparable with surgery treatment.

“…Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a standard treatment choice for patients with medically inoperable, early-stage (T1-2, N0) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), [1][2][3] with encouraging tumor control and overall survival (OS) outcomes. 4 SBRT is also often used as salvage or palliative therapy for intrathoracic recurrence or for metastatic lesions in patients with non-small cell lung cancer that was previously treated with surgery or definitive radiation therapy. [5][6][7] SBRT, in 1 or several fractions, results in different toxicity risks compared with conventionally fractionated radiation therapy.…”

“…For early stage lung cancer, several treatment options exist and surgery is associated with the most favourable outcome 8,9 . However, stereotactic body radiotherapy is an effective alternative, particularly for patients that are medically unfit for surgery 10,11 . More recently, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave therapy (MWA) have been suggested as treatment options 12,13 .…”

“…В структуре онкологической заболеваемости пер-вое место занимает рак легкого (РЛ) [3,9,13], от ко-торого ежегодная смертность в разных регионах зем-ного шара увеличивается на 5-15 % [20]. За послед-ние годы отмечено учащение случаев метастазирова-ния РЛ в костно-суставной аппарат (так называемая костная форма болезни), что существенно ухудшило общие показатели выживаемости больных [7].…”
