Stereological study of the kidney during prenatal development in sheep

Abstract: The development of metanephros is a complex and gradual process. The number, size and distribution of nephrons provide important information about the organization of the kidney. Stereology is the current gold‐standard technique for the morphometrical evaluation of kidney structures. This study describes morphometric features of the kidney development in sheep using design‐based stereological techniques aimed to introduce the sheep as a translational model in human nephrogenesis. Left kidneys of 16 sheep fetus… Show more

“…Glomeruli are a widely accepted marker of renal health 2,33 and have been extensively investigated. [9][10][11]34 Aside from the number and size of glomeruli on a whole organ level, which is already challenging information to extract using most organ mapping techniques, we used CODA to assess parameters that are difficult to quantify at scale using conventional techniques. These parameters included the volume occupied by the Bowman's capsule and the urinary space in each glomerulus, as well as the absolute number of cells and the cell packing density of glomeruli across different regions of the kidney.…”
