Stereolithographic 3D Printing of Ceramics: Challenges and Opportunities for Structural Integrity

Abstract: This article reviews the current activities at the Montanuniversität Leoben on the design, processing, and characterization of 3D printed advanced ceramics using the lithography‐based manufacturing technology. An overview of the challenges and the opportunities offered to improve the mechanical properties of printing ceramics is given. Their brittle failure is analyzed within the framework of linear elastic fracture mechanics, considering specific aspects of additive manufacturing. Several issues associated wi… Show more

“…Among the available additive manufacturing (AM) methodologies for forming ceramic materials, lithographybased ceramic manufacturing (LCM) has become a preferred AM method because of its advantageous capabilities in on-demand manufacturing, part customization, and prototyping. [1][2][3] LCM is a layer-based, vat photopolymerization technique that polymerizes a photocurable ceramic suspension. 4 Many initial studies indicate favorable outcomes for the flexural strength properties of LCM alumina.…”

“…In order to assess and analyze recent review articles in this area, a Scopus search was conducted in April 2023 for the specific time frame of 2018–2023. This search resulted in 165 review articles on ceramic additive manufacturing or some subset of that topic 1,3–166 . Figure 1 shows a graphical representation of the number of review articles separated into five focus areas.…”
