Stereocontrolled ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters: synthesis of new polyester microstructures

Abstract: Synthesis of aliphatic polyesters has been studied intensively due to their biocompatible and biodegradable properties and their potential applications in medical and agricultural fields. There has been particular emphasis over the past decade on the synthesis of discrete, well-characterized complexes that are active polymerization initiators for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide (LA) and beta-butyrolactone (BBL) to give, respectively, poly(lactide) (PLA) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). These… Show more

“…1 Over the past two decades, ring-opening polymerization catalysts have been used to produce aliphatic polyesters with excellent structural control. 2 Advances in (stereo)control afford polymers with precise organization, 3 and the development of living catalysts has provided the opportunity to synthesize polyesters of defined molecular weight and sequence. 4 In order to further extend the applications of these polymers, it is necessary to vary and finely tune their physico-chemical properties.…”

“…PLA has attracted much attention from researchers in both industry and academia. The most efficient method for the synthesis of PLA is ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the six-membered cyclic ester lactide with a variety of metal-based complexes [4,[9][10][11]. Organocatalysts also have been employed to more precisely control the synthesis of ring-opening polymerization [12].…”

“…Among these complexes, aluminum complexes are proving more popular due to the facile nature of the preparation and relatively high degree of stereoregularity in the ROP of lactide. [62,63] Gibson investigated the polymerization rac-lactide by aluminum initiators supported by tetradentate aminophenoxide ligands ( Figure 5) and found that the polymerizations was well-controlled and living, the resultant PLA materials ranged from highly isotactic to highly heterotactic which depending upon the ligand substitution pattern. The system of the unsubstituted phenoxide groups' catalysts (complexes 7 in Figure 5) afforded PLA with high levels of 79% isoselectivity.…”
