Molecular orientation in thin films of a rigid rod conjugated polymer, a derivative of poly(para-phenylene ethynylene)s with linear side chains and thioacetyl end groups, was investigated by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction technique. The results indicated that TA-PPE molecules tended to align with their backbone planes perpendicular to substrates, that is, with an "edge-on" molecular orientation in the films. Such molecular orientation is favorable for the efficient carrier transport in two-dimensional direction in the polymer films (i.e., via both the intrachain and interchain), so that high performance organic field-effect transistors were fabricated with hole mobility at around approximately 4.3 x 10(-3) cm(2)/Vs.

The PVDF thin film was prepared on PMMA sublayer. Compared to the PVDF on Si wafer, the PMMA layer shows great influence on the crystallization of PVDF under quenching thermal treatment. When the PMMA layer is thinner than 90 nm, mixture of α- and β-crystals form. Pure β-crystals are obtained when the PMMA layer is around 90 nm. With further thickening of the PMMA layer, pure β-crystals always form but with a decreased crystallinity. The nanodomains and needlelike morphology of β-crystals is observed. Moreover the formation mechanism of β-phase on PMMA interface is clarified. The hydrogen bonds at PVDF and PMMA interface is formed adopting the perpendicular orientation, which serve as the key role to induce β-PVDF. The amount of β-PVDF is not only determined by the interaction of PMMA and PVDF at interface, but also the diffusion extent of PMMA into the PVDF layer.

The annealing behavior of amorphous i-PMMA thin films on highly oriented HDPE substrates was studied by transmission infrared spectroscopy and electron diffraction. The i-PMMA thin film on highly oriented HDPE exhibits a much faster crystallization rate than usual, providing not only a good method for the preparation of crystalline i-PMMA thin and ultrathin film, but also the convenience to observe the crystallization process by infrared spectroscopy in situ. The overall crystallization kinetics of the i-PMMA thin film on the highly oriented HDPE layer was also explored in this work, and an Avrami exponent of about 2 was obtained. The accelerated crystallization behavior indicates a special interaction between HDPE and i-PMMA, which favors the nucleation and crystallization of i-PMMA. This special interaction leads also to an oriented alignment of i-PMMA on the HDPE substrate with both polymer chains parallel, i.e., the occurrence of heteroepitaxy, which could be verified by the polarized infrared spectra and electron diffraction pattern. Electron diffraction analysis further demonstrated that the contact planes of this epitaxial system are (100) lattice planes of both polymers. This can be explained in terms of a two-dimensional lattice matching.
