“…We can however mention that the stereochemistry of the lactone-generating reactions is an intrinsic parameter for each species. Ercoli et al (1992) thus observed, when growing Y. lipolytica or P. ohmeri on the same racemic hydroxy acids, that the two species produced the opposite enantiomers.…”

“…4-dodecanolide is obtained in the (S) enantiomeric form from Yarrowia lipolytica, whereas the opposite (R) enantiomer is present among the metabolites of Pichia ohmeri. 8 Fusarium poae produced (6Z)-dodecen-4-olide only in the (R) form, suggesting that the precursor exists exclusively in the (R) form whereas 4-dodecanolide and 4-decanolide were present in an enantiomers mixture.…”

“…It was proven that the precursors of lactones were hydroxylated fatty acids of C18 chain length, which were shortened by ␤-oxidation steps followed by lactonization. 8,15,21 Haffner and Tressel 15 have studied the biotransformation of oleic acid to ␥ C10, C12 saturated and unsaturated lactones in Sporobolomyces odorus. They concluded that at least three different metabolic pathways were used for the first step including action of 10-hydratase and/or 10 lipoxygenase for C12 lactone formation.…”
