STEREO IMPACT Investigation Goals, Measurements, and Data Products Overview

Abstract: The IMPACT (In situ Measurements of Particles And CME Transients) investigation on the STEREO mission was designed and developed to provide multipoint solar wind and suprathermal electron, interplanetary magnetic field, and solar energetic particle information required to unravel the nature of coronal mass ejections and their heliospheric consequences. IMPACT consists of seven individual sensors which are packaged into a boom suite, and a SEP suite. This review summarizes the science objectives of IMPACT, the … Show more

“…By analyzing the velocity dispersion of these impulsively accelerated electrons, the field line length can be obtained in both ICMEs, where the lengths can be several times the typical Parker spiral length at the outer edge of the twisted field of a magnetic flux rope (see Fig. 2 in Luhmann et al 2007[from Larson et al 1997, and in the quiet interplanetary medium.…”

“…The SupraThermal Electron (STE) instrument is part of the IMPACT (In-situ Measurements of Particles And CME Transients) investigation (see Luhmann et al 2007, for overview), one of the four instrument packages on both spacecraft of NASA's STEREO (Solar TERrestrial RElations Observatory) mission. STE is designed to measure the ∼2-100 keV suprathermal "superhalo" electrons (Fig.…”

“…As part of the In situ Measurements of Particles and CME Transients (IMPACT) experiment (Luhmann et al 2008), the Solar Wind Electron Analyzer (SWEA) instruments (Sauvaud et al 2008) provide in situ electron measurements at both STEREO spacecraft. The SWEA instruments are hemispheric top-hat electrostatic analyzers (Carlson and McFaden 1998) with deflector plates mounted at the aperture and with microchannel plate (MCP) detectors.…”

“…This equation will be used to analyze the following events. For STEREO, we use the 1-min time resolution data from the following two instrument suites: In-situ Measurements of Particles and CME Transients (IMPACT, Luhmann et al, 2008), as well as the Plasma and Suprathermal Ion Composition (PLASTIC, Galvin et al, 2008). To analyze some fine-scale structures, such as shocks, the 8 Hz magnetic field data from the Magnetic Field Experiment (Acuña et al, 2008) are also used.…”
