Stepping From Belgium to the United States and Back: The Conceptualization and Impact of the Harvard Step Test, 1942–2012

Abstract: Brouha' s case demonstrates the importance of personal experiences, transnational relations, and interdisciplinary research settings for the establishment of scientific (sub)disciplines. Studying internal scientific evolutions in relation to personal and work experiences of "mobile" and therefore often "forgotten" researchers like Brouha is necessary to better understand and interpret evolutions in science and corresponding processes of academic and social mobility.

“…One of the first widely used step tests, which became known as the Harvard Step Test, was developed at the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory [4]. With the widespread use of the Harvard Step Test, step testing became a standard method to assess cardiorespiratory fitness in the field setting [5]. The ease of administration, minimal equipment required, marginal space needed, limited client motivation and skill required, and capability to test multiple people at once make step tests a popular mode to evaluate aerobic capacity [6,7].…”

The so-called respiratory gymnastics had already captured the interest of doctors even before Clément Lefébure had entered the public arena.…”
