Stenotrophomonas africana Drancourt et al. 1997 is a later synonym of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (Hugh 1981) Palleroni and Bradbury 1993

Abstract: Type and reference strains of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Stenotrophomonas africana were compared with each other and with the type strains of other Stenotrophomonas species, using SDS-PAGE of whole-cell proteins, DNA–DNA hybridization and extensive biochemical characterization. S. maltophilia LMG 958T and S. africana LMG 22072T had very similar whole-cell-protein patterns and were also biochemically very similar. A DNA–DNA binding level of 70 % between both type strains confirmed that S. africana and S. … Show more

“…At present, this genus is comprised of nine species, five of which, S. dokdonensis, S. humi, S. koreensis, S. rhizophila, and S. terrae, were not available for the study presented here. The delineation of S. africana from S. maltophilia has been debated (10,21). This work also confirms that S. africana is a synonym for S. maltophilia.…”

“…Cluster analysis of the gyrB RFLP patterns of studied Stenotrophomonas isolates revealed 9 different clusters, while several strains showed distinct and unique patterns (Coenye et al, 2004a(Coenye et al, , 2004b. The majority of CF isolates are grouped in 2 clusters, named B and C, thus suggesting that specific genomic groups have an increased potential for colonization of the respiratory tract of CF patients (Coenye et al, 2004a(Coenye et al, , 2004b.…”

“…S. dokdonensis was recently moved to a different genus (Lee et al, 2008;Yoon et al, 2006). S. africana, which had been considered as a new species in 1997, was later found to be synonymous to S. maltophilia (Coenye et al, 2004a;Drancourt et al, 1997). Stenotrophomonas spp.…”
