Stem cell‐like populations and immunoregulatory molecules in periodontal granulation tissue

Abstract: Periodontal lesions, albeit inflamed, retain healing potential as inferred by the presence of MSC-like cells with similar immunophenotypic characteristics to those found in healthy periodontal tissue. Therefore, there might be merits for healing in preserving sufficient GT in-situ during periodontal surgery.

“…Moreover, we did not assess the carotid intima−media thickness (c-IMT) and flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery that could better evaluate the possible endothelial dysfunction in the analyzed sample. Furthermore, the median CRP values of patients in both groups of the present study were slightly higher compared to those in other similar studies [50][51][52][53][54]. These differences in median CRP values may be due to a systematic bias linked to the laboratory assay used in the present study and, therefore, should be carefully considered when interpreting results.…”

“…Zhang et al demonstrated that initial inflammatory stimuli of IL-1 and TNF-α appeared essential for GMSCs proliferation and tissue regeneration, while with inflammatory persistence, this effect turned to osteogenesis followed by a short-term stimulatory [71]. However, Apatzidou et al demonstrated that GMSCs from periodontal granulation tissue possessed similar immunophenotype and regeneration feature to those in healthy periodontal tissue [72]. Many studies have also demonstrated that other elements also affect the biological characteristics of GMSCs, for instance, Lee et al reported that dexamethasone accelerated the aging of GMSCs through downregulating SIRT1 and IL6 and upregulating EDN1 genes via the AGE/RAGE pathway [73].…”

“…Granulation tissue (GT) possesses great healing capacity and offers a large number of new vessels, fibroblasts and macrophages. Also, periodontal GT was proven to contain a substantial number of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which correlates with its regenerative potential 13,14 . It has been shown that GT promotes regeneration and resolution of inflammation in periodontitis 15 .…”
