Stem Cell and Research in Plastic Surgery

Abstract: Regenerative medicine using stem cells has progressed significantly over the last decade. Plastic surgeons historically have used tissues of human being to restore various defect sites and utilized a single cell lines for the tissue regeneration. The cell sources (autologous or allogeneic), cell types (embryonic stem cell or adult stem cell), and source of tissues (bone marrow, muscle, adipose, cartilage, or blood) are very important for stem cell-based tissue coverage. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent pre… Show more

“…Autologous adipose graft was applied for complicated wound repair 15 , and also often used to regenerate soft tissues in plastic surgery. Its efficacy andsafety are widely accepted 16 17 , but there is lack of direct evidence for its mechanism.…”

“…In this work, we have focused on adult human adipose mesenchymal stem cells (hASCs). These stem cells during the last ten years have attracted highest interest since they may be easily isolated from human subcutaneous adipose tissue [ 21 , 22 ] and have been demonstrated to have great regenerative potential toward different tissues, including multi damaged tissues after prostatectomy [ 23 ]; plastic surgery [ 24 ]; heart regeneration [ 25 ]; bone [ 26 ]; cartilage [ 27 ]; and skeletal muscle [ 28 ].…”

“…Recently, fat tissue has been extensively studied for its role in wound repair. It is used to regenerate soft tissues in plastic surgery and its safety and efficacy are largely accepted [38] . Also, autologous adipose graft was applied to help in complicated wound repair, but there is lack of evidence for its mechanism [39] .…”
