Steinernema puertoricensis n. sp. (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae), una nueva especie de nematodo entomopatógeno de Puerto Rico

Abstract: Steinernema puertoricensis n. sp., isolated from sand collected from a coconut plantation, can be distinguished from S. glaseri, its most closely related species, by characteristics of the first generation adults. The female has a greater body length (8.6 mm) and width (375 µm). Males have the excretory pore anteriad or posteriad to the nerve ring. Spicules are arcuate and lack a hook at the ventral side of the spicule tip. Infective third-stage juveniles are over 1 mm in length. This appears to be the first s… Show more

“…Indeed, in the Steinernema genus, the species grouping seems to be already well established. Among the 17 Steinernema species described (Poinar, 1990;Doucet & Doucet, 1990;Nguyen & Smart, 1992;Cabanillas et al 1994;Mracek, 1994;Mracek et al 1994;Roman & Figueroa, 1994), we have tested 9 of them (Grenier et al 1995) and our results are completely in agreement with this current grouping.…”

“…At this level, species identification has been a formidable and a time-consuming task -especially for Heterorhabditis -even for well-qualified taxonomists. For this reason, only 6 species of Heterorhabditis have been clearly recognized (Poinar, 1990;Poinar et al 1992;Stock, 1993;Gardner, Stock & Kaya, 1994), while 17 species have yet been described in the genus Steinernema (Poinar, 1990;Doucet & Doucet, 1990;Nguyen & Smart, 1992;Mracek et al 1994;Roman & Figueroa, 1994), including Steinernema kraussei (Mracek, 1994), Steinernema longicaudum and Steinernema serratum (Cabanillas, Poinar & Raulston, 1994). Still now, many isolates remain unassigned at the species level and the different strains inside a particular species cannot be distinguished.…”
