Steel Gases as Ancient and Modern Challenging Resource; Historical Review, Description of the Present, and a Daring Vision

Abstract: Steel is a critical material for many aspects of modern life. Transport systems, communications, civil infrastructure, and industrial engineering could not survive without it, yet the steel industry is reported to be responsible for 5 – 7 % of anthropogenic CO2 emissions making it a major contributor to climate change. Efficient utilization of the carbon rich by‐products of steel production in order to avoid CO2 emissions is vital. Traditionally by‐product gases have been used as fuel‐gas for heating applicati… Show more

“…As part of the Carbon2Chem® project, the plasma‐assisted removal of oxygen traces (DeOxo process) from coke oven gas (COG) is investigated. Coke oven gas is rich in hydrogen (60 %) and has a rather high CO content (10 %), which makes it a promising future feedstock for the synthesis of basic chemicals such as methanol or higher alcohols . O 2 traces must be reduced to a minimum to guarantee the safe operation of downstream processes.…”

“…During the primary steel production route, carbonaceous off-gases are generated during the main production steps of: (1) conversion of coal to coke in the coke oven, (2) pig iron production in the blast furnace and (3) processing of pig iron to steel in the basic oxygen furnace [1]. Since the usage of fossil fuels (usually coal and natural gas) as reducing agents in the blast furnace is intensely optimized [4], alternative ways are investigated for the reduction in those emissions. Generally, a common way to avoid the flaring of Energies 2021, 14, 2904 2 of 24 steelmaking off-gases is their use as internal energy sources both for heating and power production.…”

“…It has to provide the quality requirements of the synthesis gas on an industrial scale which are needed for the catalyzed chemical reactions in the laboratory. For this purpose, conventionally available gas purification technologies are tested on a technical scale with real metallurgical gases .…”
