Stay or Leave? Avian Behavioral Responses to Urbanization in Latin America

Abstract: Behavioral adjustments are at the forefront of the mechanisms that birds employ to deal with environmental changes. We here review the literature focused on how behavior influences bird responses when faced with the challenges of urbanization in Latin America. Most of reviewed studies assessed for patterns of responses to urbanization with incipient information regarding the behavioral adjustments, as well as the filtering of specific behavioral phenotypes. A common and unsurprising tendency was that several a… Show more

“…Urban areas shelter nearly 20% of the world's bird species (Aronson et al 2014), mostly in greenspaces (Ortega-Álvarez and MacGregor-Fors 2009). These species respond in different ways to urbanization, either by avoiding, tolerating or exploiting (Blair 1996;Marzluff 2001;Caula et al 2008;Shochat et al 2010;Evans et al 2015;Rayner et al 2015;Seress and Liker 2015;González-Lagos and Quesada 2017;Piratelli et al 2017;Murgui and Hedblom 2017). The occurrence of birds in urban settlements can be influenced by both the regional (e.g.…”

“…The ability to colonize and thrive in urban conditions is a key factor that facilitates the successful invasion of species (Møller et al 2015;González-Lagos and Quesada 2017). In this study, we found that House Sparrows from Mexico City were significantly bolder in terms of alert distances than those from Barcelona and Los Angeles (with also differed significantly among them), with 'sex/age' representing an important variables Barcelona.…”

“…Classical studies have focused on population dynamics while other important aspects such as behavior have received less attention (Sol and Maspons, 2016). Recently, behavior has been identified as a key element to explain successful invasion of new areas (Evans, 2010;González-Lagos and Quesada, 2017). Studies have highlighted the role of behavior in understanding specialization in species' use of movement and space with niche specialization (Spiegel et al, 2017;Schirmer et al, 2019).…”
