“Stay nearby or get checked”: A Covid-19 control strategy

Abstract: This paper repurposes the classic insight from network theory that long-distance connections drive disease propagation into a strategy for controlling a second wave of Covid-19. We simulate a scenario in which a lockdown is first imposed on a population and then partly lifted while long-range transmission is kept at a mini-mum. Simulated spreading patterns resemble contemporary distributions of Covid- 19 across EU member states, German and Italian regions, and through New York City, providing some model valida… Show more

“…What we have not undertaken here, is to investigate or advocate any particular forms of changed behaviours that might be needed by those released, although understanding them can allow parameters (such as transmission rates) to be adjusted in our framework. Additional measures proposed include: reopening local connections before connecting cities further apart 26 , differential release times based on age 2729 , on-going social distancing 9,30,31 , contact tracing using mobile applications 32 and behaviour monitoring 33 , case-finding 34 and cyclic schedules (e.g. short working weeks) 35,36 .…”

“…The issue with coming out of lockdown or relaxing scenario in between different periods of lockdown is an unexpected surge of transmission waves. [13][14][15] It challenges the medical infrastructure with overburdened staff and stressed supplies; and this seems to be true for almost every country. [16][17][18] The volatility analysis of wold economy suggests there will be a deep depression around the world in the year 2020; 3,19,20 and WHO recently stated the virus will be around for a while.…”

“…e advantage of this strategy is that it can better preserve the integrity of the network during the control of epidemics on the scale-free network [83]. e result of Brethouwer et al [136] showed that reductions of long-distance transmission are highly efficient for curbing the spread of COVID-19.…”
