Status of the Design of the Fair Storage Rings

Abstract: Three storage rings with a maximum magnetic rigidity of 13 Tm are foreseen as part of the FAIR project. They will mainly serve the preparation of intense secondary beams of antiprotons and rare isotopes, which are produced with high intensity proton and heavy ion beams, respectively. Cooling, by stochastic and electron cooling, and accumulation as well as deceleration of the secondary beams are manipulation techniques which are foreseen. Internal targets and collisions of rare isotope beams with electrons or a… Show more

“…A complex of several storage rings is planned at the future FAIR facility which is schematically illustrated in Figure 11. It is proposed to extend the existing GSI facility by adding the heavy-ion synchrotrons SIS-100 and SIS-300, a two-stage large-acceptance superconducting fragment separator Super-FRS [140] and a dedicated complex of storage rings (the Collector Ring (CR), the Recuperated Experimental Storage Ring (RESR), the New Experimental Storage Ring (NESR), and the High-Energy Storage Ring (HESR)) [141].…”
