To be able to find answers for challenging research questions about the universe, advanced machinery in major research institutions -e.g. accelerator complexes -is needed. In such expensive research facilities, which generate ionizing radiation, it is necessary to protect people, infrastructure and the environment from harm. To meet functional safety requirements, machinery shall fulfil high safety standards throughout its life. This paper aims to propose a methodology for preserving the functional safety of the equipment already in operation and the maintenance phase of the lifecycle. A methodology is proposed to enable better integration of information from practice into design requirements for modifications, such as upgrades and retrofits. The method is based on existing functional safety standards. The goal is to increase the operational time while preserving performance at the intended level.

For the precise measurement of the hyperfine structure of antiprotonic helium microwave radiation of 12.9 GHz frequency is needed, tunable over ±100 MHz. A cylindrical microwave cavity is used whose front and rear faces are meshed to allow the antiprotons and laser beams to enter. The cavity is embedded in a cryogenic helium gas target. Frequency tuning of _ 300 MHz with Q values of 2700-3000 was achieved using over-coupling and an external triple stub tuner. We also present Monte-Carlo simulations of the stopping distribution of antiprotons in the low-density helium gas using the GEANT4 package with modified energy loss routines.

The design and properties of a new cryogenic set-up for laser–microwave–laser hyperfine structure spectroscopy of antiprotonic helium – an experiment performed at the CERN-Antiproton Decelerator (AD), Geneva, Switzerland – are described. Similar experiments for 4He have been performed at the AD for several years. Due to the usage of a liquid helium operated cryostat and therefore necessary refilling of coolants, a loss of up to 10% beamtime occurred. The decision was made to change the cooling system to a closed-circuit cryocooler. New hermetically sealed target cells with minimised 3He gas volume and different dimensions of the microwave resonator for measuring the 3He transitions were needed. A new set-up has been designed and tested at Stefan Meyer Institute in Vienna before being used for the 2009 and 2010 beamtimes at the AD.
