Micro-channel plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT) is a kind of photosensitive device with single photon detection capability and great time resolution, which is also called Fast-PMT (FPMT). The characteristic of MCP makes the MCP-PMT capable of reaching great spatial resolution with multi-anodes. With the experience of successfully R&D of the 20-inch MCP-PMT, the researchers in IHEP are now developing the multi-anodes FPMT with great time resolution and spatial resolution. By now, the single-anode, 2×2 anodes, 4×4 anodes and 8×8 anodes FPMT prototypes have been successfully produced. With the fast-timing test system, the performance of these prototypes has been tested. The best TTS can reach 76 ps for single photoelectron and 15 ps for multi photoelectrons.

Cooperating with the North Night Vision Science & Technology (Nanjing) Research Institute Co. Ltd, Institute of High Energy of Physics in China is developing a 2-inch square shape 8 × 8 anodes micro-channel-plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT) with a time resolution of picosecond level. It has a 40 × 40 mm2 bi-alkali photocathode with a peak quantum efficiency (QE) of about 22% around a wavelength of 410 nm. With the chevron MCP stack, the MCP-PMT can reach a gain of over 106 under a working voltage of 1500 V. The typical output waveform has an amplitude of 64 mV and a rise time of 334 ps. Due to the well-designed structure of the MCP-PMT, the transit time spread (TTS) for the middle anode can reach 36 ps when working at single photon mode. To evaluate the performance uniformity of the 8× 8 anodes MCP-PMT, ten anodes which constitutes the smallest repetition unit of the anode array are chosen and tested. The average transit time spread (TTS) for the 64 anodes is 44.1 ± 2.0 ps.

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) in China aiming to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy is under construction and the 15,000 MCP-PMTs produced in NNVT, which will be installed as the central liquid scintillator detector of JUNO, have been completed and delivered by August of 2020. During the mass production process, breakthrough of the photocathode technology greatly improved the quantum efficiency (QE) of the MCP-PMT from 30% to 35% and so the detection efficiency (DE) has been improved. The performance of other parameters keeps steady during the mass production process of 15,000 MCP-PMTs. The average QE at 400 nm for the 15,000 pieces of MCP-PMTs is 32%. With a layer of high-SEY material deposited on the MCP, the collection efficiency can reach nearly 100% and the average DE at 400 nm for the 15k pieces of MCP-PMTs is 31.5%.
