Status of High-efficiency Motor Technology and MEPS

Abstract: -Minimum Energy Performance Standard(MEPS) has been adapted in Korea since 2008.The efficiency standard of variable speed motors is scheduled for publication shortly. In this paper, author reviews the technical trends associated with a high efficient electric motors by reference to research papers, and reviews the research direction to prepare for IE5. This paper provides an overview of high efficiency motors. Various applications have been covered.

“…Ue to the global warming and the environmental concerns as a result of the increased demand in the electric energy, new regulations have been imposed on the efficiency of the electric motors [1]. This is due to the fact that electric motors consume about 46% of the global produced energy and about 60% of the total industrial energy [1]- [3]. Consequently, a small increase in efficiency results in a huge save/reduction in the generated/consumed energy.…”
