Status of Early 19th-Century Names Authored in Parallel by Wied and Schinz for South American Reptiles and Amphibians, with Designations of Three Nomina Protecta

Abstract: Prince Maximilian zu Wied's great exploration of coastal Brazil in 1815-1817 resulted in important collections of reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, many of which were new species later described by Wied himself. The bulk of his collection was purchased for the American Museum of Natural history in 1869, although many "type specimens" had disappeared earlier. Wied carefully identified his localities but did not designate type specimens or type localities, which are taxonomic concepts that were not yet e… Show more

“…Additionally, he described Enyalius perditus as a new species. The only changes in Enyalius taxonomy since then are the description of Enyalius erythroceneus, and the formal elevation of E. catenatus, E. pictus and E. bibronii to species status, resurrecting Etheridge's scheme (Rodrigues et al, 2006) and changing priority in authorship of E. pictus from Wied 1823 to Schinz 1822 (Myers et al, 2011).…”

“…A few names used earlier by Maximilian were subsequently discarded and (with one exception) not even mentioned in the Beiträge. We explain these otherwise confusing and nearly forgotten usages under species headings that are inserted in appropriate places in the present text (for names authored in parallel by Wied and Schinz, see also Myers et al, 2011). The arrangement of color plates reprinted herein from the Abbildungen (1822-1831) parallels the order of the text arrangement, for which purpose we have arbitrarily numbered them 1-56.…”

“…Examples: the status of names authored in parallel by Prince Maximilian and his friend Prof. Heinrich Schinz at the University of Zurich (see Myers et al, 2011); another pocket of confusion associated itself with AMNH cataloging errors attached to Wied's specimens of Xenodon (Myers and McDowell, 2014: 83-92).…”
