Status of Austropotamobius Pallipes Complex in the Watercourses of the Alessandria Province (N-W Italy)

Abstract: Information was gathered on the distribution of white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes complex in the watercourses of the Alessandria province (NW Italy), on the biological and ecological preferences of the species, and on the features of the biotopes in which it is found. A total of 409 sites on 361 watercourses connected to the main sub-basins of the Po River were analysed, with data gathered during the field research phase, conducted for three consecutive summers from 2002 through 2004. Thirteen pe… Show more

“…This decline is due to causes frequently linked to direct human action, such as habitat fragmentation, deforestation and water deterioration (Nardi et al, 2005;Trouilhe et al, 2007;Favaro et al, 2010). Consequently, the species is listed in the EU Directive 92/43/EEC, commonly known as Habitat Directive (Annex II and V) and it is also listed as endangered by the IUCN (Füreder et al, 2010).…”

“…A second reason could be the presence of different predators in the daytime and at nighttime, which could lead to similar predation pressure on macroinvertebrates. The confirmed presence of diurnal fish predators, such as brown trout (Salmo trutta, Linnaeus, 1758) and chub (Squalius cephalus, Linnaeus, 1758), could be balanced by the presence of nocturnal white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes complex), with abundant populations in the study area and in this watercourse (Zaccara et al, 2004;Nardi et al, 2005). Normally this crayfish has been considered an opportunistic omnivorous animal, but the importance of macroinvertebrates in its diet has been well documented in such ecosystems, and even in different life stages (Scalici and Gibertini, 2007).…”

“…In fact, the use of separate tanks for disinfection reduces the quantity of treated water to a great extent (tank volume of 4 l) and facilitates the separate management of treated water, thus avoiding its release into natural water bodies. In Italy, a great deal of attention has been paid to the reintroduction of white-clawed crayfish (Nardi et al 2005) and several LIFE projects, funded by the EU, are focused on this species (e.g., http://www. lifecrainat.eu/en/).…”
