“…Historical events like the creation of the European Union, the German reunification, or the disintegration of the Soviet Union at the end of the twentieth century led to the shaping of the world system. At the same time, various regional and military conflicts, coupled with an increase in terrorist acts, oil crises and economic shocks have determined changes in the power relations, while new powers and emergent economies have asserted themselves in the world economy (Krauthammer, 2002;Haass, 2008;Freddy & Thomas, 2023). Despite the excited reaction from international relations analysts and academics, these developments hardly paint a picture of a brics capable of or even interested in entirely upending and replacing existing global power structures; rather, they highlight the potential of a more multi-polar system (Freddy & Thomas 2023).…”

“…The brics are commonly perceived as wanting to "reshape" (Li & Marsh 2016, 2976 or "structural [ly] reform" (Van Noort 2019, p.470) global power structures, acting as "a revisionist power within the global economic governance" (Freddy & Thomas 2023, no page). Their aims, ultimately, are to achieve a measure of parity in global governance (De Coning 2023), status (Røren & Beaumont -2019;Cooper 2021;Freddy & Thomas 2023) and recognition (Li & Marsh 2016). The brics' documentations and records assert their commitment to "contributing to the long-term steady, sound and balanced growth of the world economy" (2011 brics Declaration, cited in Van Noort 2019, 469).…”
