Ram Gnanadesikan was one of the foremost industrial statisticians of the twentieth century. After completing his PhD at the University of North Carolina, he spent 2 years at Procter & Gamble before joining Bell Labs in 1959, where he rose to be the head of the statistics and data analysis research department. (Bell Labs was the research and development arm of the nationwide Bell System in the United States before its breakup in 1984.) At the breakup Ram joined Bellcore as division manager of information sciences research. In 1986, he was promoted to assistant vice president of information sciences and technologies research. In 1991, He joined the Rutgers University department of statistics as a professor, where he remained until his retirement in 1998. The goal of this article is to highlight some of Ram's many accomplishments during his career as a leader, researcher, and educator.
