Statistics of the dynamic speckle produced by a rotating diffuser and its application to the assessment of paint drying

Abstract: We explore alternative ways to assign a measure to dynamic speckle patterns produced by different phenomena. Both the power spectrum and the autocorrelation of the intensity are considered. First, we describe an experimental study of the statistics of the Fresnel speckle patterns produced by illuminating a diffuser with laser light as a phenomenon where some control can be maintained on the dynamic variables. The diffuser rotates in a plane with constant angular speed. A correlation is established between some… Show more

“…We believe that there may exist a statistical mapping between the summations in Eqs. (17) and (18), but probably such mapping exists only for this case where the samples are ordered and each value of the sequence appears in w 1 different samples (except the values at the beginning and at the end of the sequence). Such statistical mapping is out of the scope of this paper, but we think it could be subject of future work, since the summation of summations of absolute values on running windows is used in other image processing analysis problems such as image compression quality analysis [21].…”

“…8) could only be explained by a deeper study of the statistical mapping between Eqs. (17) and (18). The behavior of MWD and MWD 0 for w 4 or w 20 strongly depends on the characteristic of data obtained by the experiment.…”

“…Speckle activity has been extensively studied and as results of several research projects in Optics a wide variety of parameters and methodologies for measuring the activity of such kind of speckle patterns have been proposed. In literature a wide range of applications are reported, from industrial applications like paint drying monitoring [1][2][3] to physiological activity of living objects such as blood flow, heartbeat, viability of seeds, maturity and bruising in fruits among others [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. The metrological uses of dynamic speckle well consolidated by systematic testing of all the approaches arising by the many applications [11] suggest that it can be used as a tool for monitoring cultivation of microalgae in laboratory scale photobioreactor.…”
