Statistics of reaction progress variable and mixture fraction gradients of a pulverised coal jet flame using Direct Numerical Simulation data

Abstract: The statistical behaviour of the variances, covariance and gradients of the reaction progress variable (c), and the mixture fraction (ξ) have been analysed in a pulverised coal jet flame using a three-dimensional carrier phase direct numerical simulation (DNS) dataset. It has been observed that the Favre-PDFs of c and ξ can be parametrised by the standard β function. Furthermore, the log-normal distribution has been found to accurately represent |∇c| and |∇ξ|. It is also found that ∇c and ∇ξ remain aligned thr… Show more

“…The log-normal distribution provides an excellent fit for |∇Z| distribution in downstream locations for all flame zones. Slight discrepancies are observed for very small values of |∇Z|, which is consistent for the non-premixed and stratified combustion studies in the literature [86,87,88,89,90]. The PDFs of |∇C| in Fig.…”

“…The PDFs of |∇C| in Fig. 10 show that the log-normal distribution does not adequately capture the PDFs of |∇C|, which is expected and was also reported in previous studies [86,90].…”

“…The simulation has been performed using the code known as FK 3 , which has been used in several previous studies on turbulent, reacting, and multiphase flows. [27][28][29][30][31] The code solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, enthalpy, and chemical species in the context of the finite volume framework. A skeletal chemical mechanism comprising nine chemical species and twenty reactions 32 is used to represent hydrogen-air combustion.…”

“…The interaction between the gas phase and particle phase is depicted using the Particle-Source-In-Cell (PSIC) method through a two-way coupling approach. 27,41,53 The indices i, j iterate through each particle, with n denoting the total number of particles in the local cell and V representing the grid cell volume. In order to simplify the analysis, eq 10 defines the momentum source term.…”
