Statistics of microstructure patchiness in a stratified lake

Abstract: [1] Statistics of microstructure patches in a sheared, strongly stratified metalimnion of Lake Banyoles (Catalonia, Spain), which occupied ∼40% of the total lake depth of 12 m, are analyzed. Light winds (<3 m s −1 ) dominated the periods of observation in late June and early July of 2009. The patch sizes h p and the corresponding patch Thorpe scales L Tp were identified using profiling measurements of temperature microstructure and small-scale shear. The distribution of h p was found to be lognormal with mean … Show more

“…Swain, 1985;Downing and Rath, 1988). The usefulness of chlorophyll a comes from its prevalence amongst photosynthetic microorganisms, from algae and diatoms to cyanobacteria; indeed it is now regularly employed within glacial studies as a biomarker (Stibal et al, 2010;Morato et al, 2011). Whilst chlorophyll a is a good general biomarker, the importance of additional biomarkers, in order to measure the abundance and distribution of particular photoautotrophs, should not be underestimated (Stewart and Farmer, 1984).…”

“…In summer, the lake is stratified, the internal seiches are permanently active, and the first and second vertical modes are excited (Roget et al 1997), as was the case during the campaign. The same data are used to study the mesoscale intermittency within the main sheared thermocline of the lake (Planella et al 2011). …”

“…The Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal (BoB) are two major basins in the northern Indian Ocean, which influenced by reversing monsoon wind [2]. Surface salinity of the BoB is greatly affected by large freshwater input due to precipitation (~2 m yr −1 ) [24] and large river discharges (1.625 × 10 12 m 3 yr −1 ) [3]. The Arabian Sea freshwater evaporation is ∼1 m yr −1 .…”
