Statistical Research on Marine Natural Products Based on Data Obtained between 1985 and 2008

Abstract: Since the 1960s, more than 20,000 compounds were discovered from marine organisms. In this paper we performed a quantitative analysis for the novel marine natural products reported between 1985 and 2008. The data was extracted mainly from the reviews of Faulkner and Blunt [1–26]. The organisms producing these marine natural products are divided into three major biological classes: marine microorganisms (including phytoplankton), marine algae and marine invertebrate. The marine natural products are divided into… Show more

“…According to conservative estimations, at least 30 000 compounds, including many interesting new structures, have been isolated from marine organisms. [23][24][25][26] Endophytic microorganisms, mainly fungi, have been coevoluting for millions of years with their eukaryotic hosts, the higher plants, representing an important increasing resource of new secondary metabolites. In the last decade, approximately half of newly discovered fungal metabolites (some 5000 compounds) were isolated from endophytic strains.…”

“…Since 1974, when the first sponge-derived natural products become part of the pharmacopoeia (e. g., cytarabine and vidarabine), marine natural products have gained much research interest [6,7]. So far, over 20,000 natural products have been isolated and identified from various marine organisms [8].…”

“…A quantitative analysis of the natural products of marine organisms demonstrated that more than 20000 compounds have been isolated and that the vast majority correspond to terpenoids and alkaloids from marine invertebrates (Hu et al, 2011;Blunt et al, 2011). Considering marine macroalgae, the number of isolated compounds corresponds to 10% of the total, mainly obtained from red and brown species.…”

“…Considering marine macroalgae, the number of isolated compounds corresponds to 10% of the total, mainly obtained from red and brown species. Halogenated compounds have received remarkable attention, mainly due to their strong bioactivity (Hu et al, 2011).…”
