Statistical Prediction of Future Sports Records Based on Record Values

Abstract: Point prediction of future record values based on sequences of previous lower or upper records is considered by means of the method of maximum product of spacings, where the underlying distribution is assumed to be a power function distribution and a Pareto distribution, respectively. Moreover, exact and approximate prediction intervals are discussed and compared with regard to their expected lengths and their percentages of coverage. The focus is on deriving explicit expressions in the point and interval pred… Show more

“…In this sport, one team (one or two player) is assigned to be the server and the other to be the receiver throughout every point of the game. Swings in tennis matches frequently occurred with one player winning the first set by a relatively large margin but losing the second set reversely [2]. Hence, a fun phenomenon in tennis that can account for the situation is the "momentum", which generally means the psychological or physiological advantage for players at one point in a match [3].…”

“…More recently, Serinaldi and Kilsby (2018) further investigated the frequency of record-breaking events by properly accounting for their spatiotemporal dependency structure and demonstrated that, under this condition, their occurrence is much less surprising than for independent variates. Despite these initiatives, little attention has been placed at the prediction of future records once an exceptionally large realization of a given hydrological variable is observed, albeit this issue has been addressed in other fields (Seo and Kim 2017;Volovskiy and Kamps 2020;Empacher et al 2023;Shcherbakov 2023). Nonetheless, properly summarizing the uncertainty on the magnitude of future precipitation and flooding record events might be beneficial for managers and stakeholders.…”
