Statistical parametric mapping analysis of the relationship between regional cerebral blood flow and symptom clusters of the depressive mood in patients with pre-dialytic chronic kidney disease

Abstract: In this study, the separate symptom clusters were correlated with specific rCBF patterns similar to those in major depressive disorder patients without CKD. However, some areas with discordant rCBF patterns were also noted when compared with major depressive disorder patients. Further larger scale investigations are needed.

“…Regarding our clinical sample, subjects with comorbid anxiety were included to improve generalizability of findings to MDD patients seeking care, but we did not have sufficient information to perform a stratified analysis of MRF cordance changes in individuals with or without anxiety; because our ROI has been implicated in anxiety conditions as well as in MDD by some studies (Blackhart et al, 2006; Kline and Allen, 2008; Kim et al, 2008; Gotlib, 1998. Schmidt, 1999) though not by all (e.g., Warwick et al, 2008), future investigations may usefully record the presence and severity of comorbid anxiety-spectrum symptoms and disorders to permit such analyses.…”

“…One study has documented the presence of intracranial arachnoid cysts in ADPKD (13), but more studies examined MRI findings in patients undergoing various renal replacement therapies (RRTs) and have reported the presence of cerebral atrophy and decreased cerebral density in both white and gray matter (9,(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21). Walters et al (18) showed that five HD patients had postdialysis increases in cerebral volume compared with five controls.…”

“…Conversely, improvement in depressive symptoms has been associated with higher perfusion in the left middle temporal gyrus and higher rCBF in the right parahippocampal gyrus (10,14). To date, no such studies have been conducted with children and adolescents with CKD.…”

“…In their previous study using F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography, they found that several voxel clusters had significantly decreased cerebral glucose metabolism in patients with chronic kidney disease who had not started dialysis, including the prefrontal cortex, superior temporal gyrus and middle temporal gyrus [33]. Kim et al reported that depressive mood and anxiety factors were negatively correlated with regional cerebral blood flow in bilateral superior temporal gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus and left superior frontal gyrus [34]. Thus, all of them cannot reflect the baseline directly as resting-state studies can.…”
