Amongst the present water treatment technologies membrane separation is gaining focus nowadays. Emulsion liquid membrane is one of the advanced strategies used for pollution removal from waste water in which the use of biosurfactant makes this approach eco-friendly technique. The norfloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolones class of antibiotic and extensively used for urinary tract infections, which is the model pollutant in this study. Saponin was solvent extracted from soapnuts and used as biosurfactant. The main and interactive effects of parameters such as saponin concentration (0.01-0.03 g/100 mL), NaOH concentration (0.25-0.75 M) and Initial Norfloxacin concentration (25-75 mg/L) were investigated using Response Surface Methodology (RSM)-Box Behnken Design (BBD) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) design. The results suggested that developed 3-8-1 ANN model evaluated in terms of performance measure (R 2 : 0.9806, Chi square: 0.02) and error functions (RMSE: 0.11, MAE: 0.09, SEP: 1.16, MPE: 1.76) demonstrated superiority more precisely than the RSM model in terms of both data fitting and prediction capability. The optimal conditions for ELM were found to be: initial norfloxacin concentration 67.65 mg/L, saponin concentration 0.021 mg/100 mL, and NaOH concentration 0.36 M and the extraction efficiency at these parameter settings would be 91.27%.

In this work we present a novel procedure for ibuprofen adsorption from waters employing magnetic core-modified silver nanoparticles. We demonstrate that 93% adsorption of ibuprofen is achieved in 45 min by means of a simple method, for neutral pH and room temperature, also using a low dose of adsorbent, equal to 7 mg in 500 µL of suspension. The characterization of the adsorbent, before and after adsorption, was carried out by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, BET analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. It is worth pointing out that ibuprofen can be desorbed and the adsorbent can be reused, remaining unaltered for the first three cycles, and showing 89.3% adsorption efficiency after the third regeneration. A three-parameter model and the Langmuir isotherm characterize the kinetics and isotherm of adsorption.

Comparative Mass Transfer Study of Basic and Acid Magenta Adsorption onto Natural Clay

In this work a comparative study of basic and acid magenta sorption on Algerian natural untreated clay was investigated using theoretical models for the following conditions C0(BM) = 200 mg/L, C0(AM) = 150 mg/L, V = 500 mL, CB(BM) = 1g/L, T = 22 °C. Adsorption mechanism of both dyes based on an intraparticle diffusion, external mass transfer, and kinetic models was examined. Statistical error functions regression coefficient (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE) and the average relative error deviation ARED were used to estimate the deviation between experimental and theoretical values. This work indicated that the experimental results obtained for both dyes fitted well the chosen models in the following order: External model of Boyd < Kinetic model < Urano and Tachikawa model < External model of Weber and Morris ≤ Weber and Morris internal diffusion model. However, the calculated values of Biot number are 32.31 and 69.33 for acid magenta and basic magenta respectively, indicating that the adsorption of both dyes onto the same clay is initially controlled by external film diffusion at the first ten minutes. The adsorption capacity of the tested clay for both dyes is remarkable compared to other natural adsorbents. Where the best results were obtained for basic magenta (qexp = 198.028 mg g–1, R2 = 0.992, ARED = 0.128 and RMSE = 0.461).
