Statistical Modeling of Polarimetric SAR Data: A Survey and Challenges

Abstract: Knowledge of the exact statistical properties of the signal plays an important role in the applications of Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) data. In the last three decades, a considerable research effort has been devoted to finding accurate statistical models for PolSAR data, and a number of distributions have been proposed. In order to see the differences of various models and to make a comparison among them, a survey is provided in this paper. Texture models, which could capture the non-Gaussia… Show more

“…In the BSA coordinate system, the reciprocity theorem says that the cross-pol channels of the scattering matrix are equal, i.e., S vh = S vh . Usually, for the studying of PolSAR statistical behavior, is more convenient to represent the matrix S as a lexicographic basis vector [18]. Therefore, under the reciprocity theorem, the scattering vector could be expressed as:…”

“…The scaled Complex Multivariate Wishart model is valid in textureless areas. Target variability can be included by one or more additional parameters; the reader is referred to the work by Deng et al (2017) for a comprehensive survey of models for PolSAR data.…”

“…Regarding the estimation of p(I(x)|H 0 ) and p(I(x)|H 1 ), a lot of studies have worked on the backscattering statistical models for SAR and PolSAR images [31,32]. Among them, the multiplicative model is popular and widely used, which is based on the assumption that the observed random value Z is the product of two independent and unobserved random fields: X and Y.…”
