A central role is assumed for the region of the posterior Sylvian fissure, close to the posterior insula. At this site, activation during vestibular stimulation has been observed in previous imaging studies and labeled as the parieto-insular vestibular cortex area (PIVC). However, vestibular responses are found in other parts of the Sylvian fissure as well, including a region that is referred to as the posterior insular cortex (PIC). The anatomical and functional relationship between PIC and PIVC is still poorly understood, because both areas have never been compared in the same participants. Therefore, to better understand the apparently more complex organization of vestibular cortex in the Sylvian fissure, we employed caloric and visual object motion stimuli during functional magnetic resonance imaging and compared location and function of PIVC and PIC in the same participants. Both regions responded to caloric vestibular stimulation, but only the activation pattern in right PIVC reliably represented the direction of the caloric stimulus. Conversely, activity in PIVC was suppressed during stimulation with visual object motion, whereas PIC showed activation. Area PIC is located at a more posterior site in the Sylvian fissure than PIVC. Our results suggest that PIVC and PIC should be considered separate areas in the vestibular Sylvian network, both in terms of location and function. area PIC; area PIVC; caloric vestibular stimulation; Sylvian fissure; vestibular cortex NEW & NOTEWORTHY In this paper we examine vestibular and visual processing at the center of human vestibular cortex in the Sylvian fissure. The ability to precisely compute the location and direction of sounds in external space is a crucial perceptual process to efficiently interact with dynamic environments. Little is known, however, about how the human brain implements spatial hearing. In our study, we used fMRI to characterize the brain activity of humans listening to left, right, up and down moving as well as static sounds. Whole brain univariate results contrasting moving and static sounds varying in their location revealed a robust functional preference for auditory motion in bilateral human Planum Temporale (hPT). Importantly, multivariate pattern classification analysis showed that hPT contains information about both auditory motion directions and, to a lesser extent, sound source locations. More precisely, we observed that our classifier successfully decoded opposite axes of motion (vertical versus horizontal) but was less able to classify opposite within-axis direction (left versus right or up versus down); reminiscent of the axis of motion organization observed in the middle-temporal cortex for vision. Further multivariate analyses demonstrated that even if motion direction and location rely on partially shared pattern geometries in PT, the responses elicited by static and moving sounds were however highly distinct. Altogether our results demonstrate that human PT codes for auditory motion and location but that the underlying neural computation linked to motion processing is more reliable and partially distinct from the one supporting sound source location.All rights reserved. Investigating category- and shape-selective neural processing in ventral and dorsal visual stream under interocular suppression

Recent behavioral and neuroimaging studies using continuous flash suppression (CFS) have suggested that action-related processing in the dorsal visual stream might be independent of perceptual awareness, in line with the "vision-for-perception" versus "vision-for-action" distinction of the influential dual-stream theory. It remains controversial if evidence suggesting exclusive dorsal stream processing of tool stimuli under CFS can be explained by their elongated shape alone or by action-relevant category representations in dorsal visual cortex. To approach this question, we investigated category- and shape-selective functional magnetic resonance imaging-blood-oxygen level-dependent responses in both visual streams using images of faces and tools. Multivariate pattern analysis showed enhanced decoding of elongated relative to non-elongated tools, both in the ventral and dorsal visual stream. The second aim of our study was to investigate whether the depth of interocular suppression might differentially affect processing in dorsal and ventral areas. However, parametric modulation of suppression depth by varying the CFS mask contrast did not yield any evidence for differential modulation of category-selective activity. Together, our data provide evidence for shape-selective processing under CFS in both dorsal and ventral stream areas and, therefore, do not support the notion that dorsal "vision-for-action" processing is exclusively preserved under interocular suppression.
