Statistical forecasting for offshore wind helicopter operations

Abstract: Abstract-The influence of the wind and wave climate on offshore wind operations and maintenance is well known. These environmental factors dictate to a large extent whether turbine crew transfer (carried out by small vessels) or major lifting actions (carried out by large vessels) can be executed at sea. However the role of helicopter operations has received much less attention. In this paper the authors explore the helicopter access problem via statistical forecasting and implement a model innovation, by incl… Show more

“…), fault repair, equipment spare part management, etc. Therefore, wind power operation and maintenance ships, helicopters, and so on are essential for the daily maintenance of offshore wind farms (as shown in Figure 19), where the ship type directly affects their safety, rapidity, seakeeping, and maneuverability [202,203]. During the operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms, the transportation system can provide accommodation to the crew and technicians and can load, transport, and assemble the fault turbine components.…”

“…This was implemented using a MC approach to investigate the most cost effective approach to allocate O&M resources. There have also been separate studies done on the impact of individual resources, such as Domínguez et al's [139] work on the use of helicopters for operations and Zhang et al's [140] paper on stochastic network modelling of service vessels.…”

“…Helicopters while much more expensive can be used as a last resort for crew and component transfer; however even they are limited by wave height due to the risk of helicopter ditching. A helicopter study compares winds, waves and cloud cover on helicopter availability including using persistence and autoregressive moving average forecasts (Dominguez-Navarro et al 2014). The wind direction can impact on helicopter hover (Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand.…”
