Statistical electrodynamics

Abstract: The random pure radiation field postulated in an earlier paper is set up in a relativistically invariant manner. The requirement that this field be isotropic in three dimensions makes much of the formalism identical with the theory of isotropic turbulence, as has been noted by a previous author. It is found, however, that the more stringent requirement of invariance under the Lorentz group, together with the fact that the field components satisfy Maxwell's equations, mean that, to within a multiplicative const… Show more

“…A physical theory that underpins this philosophy is stochastic electrodynamics (SED), the foundations of which were laid in the 1960s and 1970s with the goal of eliminating the explanatory gaps of quantum theory (Marshall, 1963(Marshall, , 1965Boyer, 1969Boyer, , 1975. Since then, the framework of SED has been continuously advanced and methodologically refined (De la Peña & Cetto, 1994, 2006 Cetto, & Valdés-Hernández, 2015).…”

“…As for the key origin of the theory of SED, it's main advance began, independently, by Trevor Marshall [1], [2], [3] and Timothy Boyer [4], [5] in the 1960s . Earlier insights and initial beginnings of this work are more complicated to follow, as there are some ties to far earlier work by Planck, Nernst, and Einstein;…”

“…The zero-point radiation spectrum is derived as the Lorentz-invariant spectrum in Minkowski spacetime. [7][8] This spectrum is invariant under the scale transformation appropriate for electromagnetic theory. [28] Thus electromagnetism is invariant under the scale transformation which simultaneously multiplies all lengths and times by a positive constant σ (thus preserving c = length/time) and all energies by 1/σ (thus preserving e 2 = energy × length).…”
