BACKGROUND: b-Adrenergic receptor sympathetic nervous system (b-AR SNS) support of resting metabolic rate (RMR) is attenuated with older age, female sex, and a sedentary lifestyle. Total and abdominal adiposity and/or body fat pattern modulate some SNS-mediated physiological functions. OBJECTIVE: To determine if total and abdominal adiposity and/or body fat distribution are independently related to SNS support of RMR. DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparison of b-AR SNS support of RMR. SUBJECTS: A total of 54 healthy male and female subjects aged 18-75 y. MEASUREMENTS: RMR (ventilated hood, indirect calorimetry) before (baseline) and during complete b-AR blockade; body composition by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS: Forward stepwise multiple regression analysis using sex, exercise status, age group, %body fat, total adiposity, abdominal adiposity, and the ratio of abdominal adiposity to hip adiposity as variables revealed sex to be the strongest predictor, explaining 21% of the variability in b-AR SNS support of RMR (P ¼ 0.0006). Age group explained an additional 4% and exercise status a further 4% (both P ¼ 0.10). %Body fat, total adiposity, abdominal adiposity, and the ratio of abdominal adiposity to hip adiposity did not enter the equation. CONCLUSION: Total and abdominal adiposity and body fat pattern are not independent physiological determinants of b-AR SNS support of RMR among healthy men and women. Moreover, further support is provided for our previous finding of attenuated b-AR SNS support of RMR with age, female sex, and sedentary lifestyle.

Successive impregnation and calcination processes were performed in order to produce TiO2/perlite composites. 2 3-1 fractional factorial design was first applied to optimize the production conditions of TiO2/perlite photocatalysts. Seven TiO2/perlite composites (including three central point experiments) were produced by manipulating three process parameters (amount of TiO2 used in impregnation process, particle size of perlite and calcination temperature). Prepared TiO2/perlite photocatalysts were characterized by XRay Diffraction Spectrometry and SEM. XRD patterns indicated that anatase was the main crystalline phase for all produced samples. Degradation capacities of produced TiO2/perlite composites were investigated in methylene blue degradation process. The linear models of TiO2 loading (%) and methylene blue degradation (%) of TiO2/perlite composites were developed by regression analysis of the experimental data. As a result of analysis of variance, it was found that developed models were statistically significant with the p-value of 0.0040 and 0.0003, for TiO2 loading (%) and methylene blue degradation (%), respectively. According to the coefficient of determination (0.9821 and 0.9970 for the models of TiO2 loading and methylene blue degradation, respectively) and error analysis, developed models fit well to the experimental data. Effect of process parameters was investigated by using response surface plots. Amount of TiO2 and particle size were found as the most effective parameters on both TiO2 loading (%) and degradation efficiency (%). Calcination temperature did not affect TiO2 loading but methylene blue degradation capacity.

Citrinin (Mycotoxin) is hepato and nephrotoxic agent produced by several species of microorganisms like Aspergillus, Penicilliumand Monascus. Citrinin is generally found in stored grains and is mainly found after their harvest. The aim of the present research was to study and optimize the conditions for maximum inhibition of citrinin and fungal biomass by using aqueous leaf extract of Rhazyastricta Decne under laboratory conditions by Pencillium notatum. Optimization of culture conditions was carried out using Box-Behnken method of response surface methodology. Extent of inhibition of citrinin was carried out using HPLC and reduction in fungal biomass was carried out using dry cell weight after comparing with controls. Optimized culture conditions for inhibition as per the point prediction tool were found to be 13.16 (mg/L) for concentration of extract of Rhazyastricta Decne, 10 days of incubation period and temperature of 25 °C for growth of Pencillium notatum. These optimized values of tested parameters were compared with control citrinin production (286 mg/L) and dry cell weight production (408.65 mg). An average of 80.67±0.75% inhibition of citrinin and 81.65±2.56% of dry cell weight was obtained in an optimized medium at 10 th d of fermentation with 98.41 % and 94.37% validity, respectively.
