Statistical assessment of starch removal from starchy wastewater using membrane technology

Abstract: The present work deals with application of 2 5-2 fractional factorial design (FFD) to evaluate the operating parameters on starch separation from synthetic starchy wastewater using a hydrophilic polyethersulfone membrane with 0.65 µm pore size in a plate and frame handmade membrane module. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) combined with F-test was also used to recognize non-significant terms. The performance of the filtration process was evaluated by calculating the COD removal percentage (rejection factor) and… Show more

“…Adequacy precision is another index for efficiency of regression models, which compares model output in experimental points with average error predicted by the model. For a model with high precision, the index should take the minimum value of 4 [39]. In this study, the precision adequacy value obtained was 12.43, indicating good fitting of the model to experimental data.…”

“…Therefore, the study continued only with backwashing using permeate as a method of fouling mitigation. FFD allowed us to examine the effects of variables and their interactions on the average flux during the separation process while reducing the number of experimental runs [44,45].…”

“…Moreover, many of the articles reported about treating starch wastewater with concentration ranging between 0.25 and 5 g/L. But, in actual practice, even after carrying out a sedimentation step prior to membrane filtration, 10 g/L of starch remains in suspended form 14,15,57,58 . Therefore, experiments should be conducted at concentrations around 10 g/L, so as to have a proper idea about membrane's performance when implemented in industrial applications.…”

One important fact to mention here is that Rocha et al 14 also carried out starch separation from its model solution using fly ashbased tubular membranes.…”
