Statistical analysis of trends in organic pollution and pollution by nutrients at selected Danube river stations

Abstract: The paper describes an application of a statistical analysis for estimating long-term trends in pollutant concentrations of selected pollutants in the Danube river. The results show the changes of concentrations of NH(4)(+)-N, NO(3)(-)-N, PO(4)(3-)-P, total P, BOD(5) and COD(Cr) in a ten year period with the aim to find how the concentrations vary in the whole stretch of this river. The study was based on the data collected in the frame of Transnational Monitoring Network of the ICPDR. To obtain plausible resu… Show more

“…On a global scale, pathogenic contamination of surface water poses the most significant health risks to humans and there are countless numbers of waterborne outbreaks due to untreated or poorly treated water [9]. According to [10], the riparian states should play a central role in shaping the physico-chemical and biological environment of the Danube River Basin which is always experiencing fluctuations in the organic and mineral content as presented in Figures 2-8.…”

“…26,27 Trend analyses were undertaken on both non owadjusted orthophosphate-P concentrations (representing the inuence of both hydrological and non-hydrological factors) and ow-adjusted orthophosphate-P concentrations (representing non-hydrological factors only), following Hirsch et al 29 and Jaruskova and Liska. 30 Human related activity may account for a proportion of the latter. 31 For the ow-adjusted analyses, temporal trend analyses were undertaken on residuals obtained from ordinary least squares linear regression of orthophosphate-P concentration vs. ow.…”

“…There are several scientific studies that analyzed individual parameters in the Danube and how they evolved over longer periods of time [30,31] and a number of studies that looked at the complex interaction between parameters [32] and between parameters and their drivers [33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. However, to support authorities and decision makers, and to communicate information to the public, an overall assessment of water quality can be a very useful tool.…”
