Statistical Analysis of a Comprehensive List of Visual Binaries

Abstract: Visual binary stars are the most abundant class of observed binaries. The most comprehensive list of data on visual binaries compiled recently by cross-matching the largest catalogues of visual binaries allowed a statistical investigation of observational parameters of these systems. The dataset was cleaned by correcting uncertainties and misclassifications, and supplemented with available parallax data. The refined dataset is free from technical biases and contains 3676 presumably physical visual pairs of lum… Show more

“…Of these, 175 are included in WDS only. The remaining 395 systems are included in more than one catalogue and, consequently, their components need cross-matching (the systems themselves were cross-matched by Isaeva et al 2015 and analyzed in Kovaleva et al 2015a).…”

“…After refining our dataset by removing erroneous data of various kinds, optical pairs, rounded-up data, multiples, etc. (see discussion in Kovaleva et al 2015b), some 47500 pairs having two and more different valid observations of relative positions of the components at different epochs remained. For more than 8000 of them, three or more observations are available.…”

“…The refined WCT dataset does not include pairs with degenerate or other peculiar-type components. For other stars, since mainly only the spectral type of the primary or combined spectrum is known, we consider this available spectral type as that of the primary and expect that the secondary has the same or fainter luminosity class (Kovaleva et al 2015b).…”

“…eclipsing, visual, spectroscopic, etc.). Observational types are determined by observational techniques used to register stellar duplicity, but overlap in the spaces of physical and observational parameters (Kovaleva 2015). Usually catalogues and databases address one or few selected observational types.…”
