Stationary phases for silver ion chromatography of lipids: Preparation and properties

Abstract: Procedures for the preparation of stationary phases for several silver ion chromatographic techniques have been surveyed. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC), conventional (normal pressure) column chromatography, solid phase extraction (SPE), highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) in silver ion mode have been considered. The utilization of these stationary phases for the analysis of fatty acids and triacylglycerols has been demonstrated.

“…14, 15 Momchilova et al 16,17 have been prolific in the area of fatty acid, lipid and triacylglycerol separation. Utilising SNIA Charkraborty 18 was able to purify eicosapentaenoic acid (10) derived from chemically hydrolyzed sardine oil (Figure 4).…”

“…For example, exposing all cis 13 to the thiyl radical and obtaining 14 after SNIS purification (Scheme 1). [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27] M A N U S C R I P T Braun, 29 in a continuing study of Western Australian sandalwood oil, required SNIS to resolve three isomers of acoren-11-ol (16)(17)(18). In the same year Braun et al 30 described the use of SNIS to separately purify (Z)-γ-curcumen-l2-ol (19) and (Z)-β-curcumen-l2-ol (20), with the former requiring the SNIS to be stabilized with BHT to prevent oxidation of the conjugated diene.…”

“…Three potential ways for embedding silver ions in the HPLC system have been described so far (Momchilova and Nikolova-Damyanova, 2003;Nikolova-Damyanova, 2005): (1) adsorption of silver ions on the stationary phase, (2) silver ions embedded in the stationary phase via ionic bonds, and (3) addition of silver ions into the mobile phase.…”

“…Ag-TLC is a well-established technique in the analysis of lipids and other organic molecules containing DBs because it is cheap, simple to use, and applicable both on analytical and preparative scales. Ag-TLC has been reviewed in several works (Dobson et al, 1995;Momchilova and Nikolova-Damyanova, 2003); therefore it is not discussed in this chapter. The retention in Ag-HPLC is governed by the DB number.…”
